What To Expect

Laos is an economically underdeveloped country in which most of the population farms rice for subsistence. Education is one pathway for greater opportunity for families and communities, but schools around Luang Prabang are few and far between. Students and teachers alike must travel great distances, which is a barrier to quality education. In this project, you will build dormitories to alleviate that burden, with the mud brick structures being an environmentally friendly and cost effective way to achieve our goal. WV has partnered with two schools and an educational rice farming homestay to bring you this sustainable and impactful trip in the quaint and historic city of Luang Prabang and its surrounding hills.

Expect to bond with your group at bonfires under the starry sky, get covered from head to toe in mud during project work, learn the power of play as a means of communication with Lao school children, and be surrounded by a variety of natural scenes – from the Mekong River to the jungle and waterfall, and the rice terraces among which you will sleep in cabins.

Addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals

SDG #4. Quality Education: World Volunteer seeks to promote access to education by constructing dormitories that will enable students traveling great distances a place to stay.
SDG #9. Innovation and Infrastructure: Adobe huts utilize clay as both a cost effective and innovative way to construct adequate living facilities that foster a positive environment for learning and living.
SDG #10. Reduced Inequalities: World Volunteer addresses access to development, based on geographical positions, by creating dormitory-style living to enable students a place to live while attending school.
