What To Expect

You’ll begin and end this experience in ancient Siem Reap, for a week of exploration, service, and adventure. You’ll explore the historic temple complex of Angkor Wat, visit an unforgettable circus with a deep message of healing for the survivors of the Khmer Rouge, and interact with the African giant pouch rats that undertake the difficult and dangerous work of detecting and removing landmines to give new life to Cambodian farm land.

You’ll take a short bus ride to the village of Chan Sar, where, alongside World Volunteer, you’ll help pave the way for Community Based Tourism by building an eco bungalow. You’ll get dirty in a mud pit, work to create eco-bricks, and then layer them piece by piece to build a future shelter for tourists who want to experience local Khmer life. When you’re not building, you yourself will be immersed in village life, where you’ll play sports and games with local kids, discover “hidden” temples, listen to stories by the camp fire, and enjoy traditional Cambodian food. Your support of this community helps create the foundation for community based tourism, which has the power to sustainably support this community for generations to come!

Expect to be awed by Cambodia’s ancient beauty, friendly people, and how much satisfaction you get from building a house with your own two hands!

Addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals

SDG #9. Innovation and Infrastructure: The eco-bungalow projects seeks to build resilient infrastructure and foster innovation. Adobe bungalows utilize clay as both a cost- effective and innovative way to construct adequate living facilities.
SDG #10. Reduced inequalities: Seeks to reduce inequalities within and among countries. Through eco-tourism, small villages in Cambodia can manage and control a sustainable form of income, improving the welfare of their communities.
SDG #11. Sustainable Cities and Communities: The Eco-bungalow project supports positive economic, social and environmental links between urban and rural areas by strengthening regional development planning.
