Experience Borneo, the most biodiverse rainforest in the world, by taking active part in conservation of the critically-endangered orangutan while learning about local culture and tribal ways of life

What To Expect

Participants work alongside passionate conservationists at renowned wildlife centers, observe endangered orangutans in their natural habitat, and participate in enrichment and reforestation efforts critical to rainforest regeneration. Through direct service and cultural immersion, participants gain insight into the complex ecological and social challenges facing plants, animals, and humankind.

Expect to get close to nature at ethical hands-off conservation centres and in the wild, and learn about tribal ways of living and human dependence on fragile ecosystems.

Day 1
Arrival in Kota Kinabalu:
Learn about the many tribes of Borneo at a cultural village, receive trip orientation over a Malaysian meal, and visit a handicraft market.
Day 2
Journey to Sepilok:
View the undulating landscapes of rainforests and plantations as we make our way to Sepilok in the rainforest, where our conservation work will begin.
Day 3
Rainforest Discovery Center:
Visit the Rainforest Discovery Center for a jungle walk and canopy walk, record what flora and fauna we see to assist the center in tracking biodiversity.
Day 4
Orangutan Service Work:
Assist the Orang Utan Conservation Center and the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Center through welfare and physical enrichment activities for the animals
Day 5
Cultural Immersion:
Travel to Kinabatangan, home of the second longest river in Malaysia, to learn about the ways of life in the water village for the Orang Sungai people, and assist in making hornbill nests at the Hornbill Center
Day 6
Wildlife Spotting Cruise:
Take a sunrise river cruise to spot Borneo’s famed proboscis monkeys and other animals before taking a bus back to Kota Kinabalu.
Day 7
Departure Day:
Visit a bustling local market before returning to the airport to fly home.

SDG #12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns- Students have the opportunity to learn about environmental conservation from leaders in this community and observe sustainable principles in practice.
SDG #13. Climate Change: This project works with current environmental organisations to improve education and awareness raising on impact reduction. It also promotes education for effective climate change-related planning and strategies.
SDG #15. Life on Land: This project aims to sustainably manage and protect terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity to avoid significant adverse impacts, enabling economic growth and reduced environmental degradation of Malaysian forests.
