Background
The start of 2012 means planning for new building projects in Laos! World Volunteer is building a ECO–Bungalow in Ban Long Lao Mai, a village which has an opportunity to generate alternative income through tourism thanks to the building project. The idea is to build a clay eco-lodge to be used by smaller groups of visitors with an interest in sustainable tourism accompanied by well-trained guides. Since the tourism in Laos is increasing dramatically, as well as many of them are interested in enjoying a sustainable holiday, the timing for this project seems highly appropriate. The eco-lodge will be completely owned by the village and 100% of the accommodations fees will go to the village.
The clay eco-lodge will provide the village with a facility that will generate cash income as well as labor opportunities for years to come. During the construction process we will transfer knowledge in building with earthen materials to the villagers as we work alongside each other in the project. This will create opportunities for them to build their own eco-friendly and cost effective houses.
Ban Long Lao Mai
Ban Long Lao Mai is a beautiful village located in the central parts of Laos. Rivers floats next to the village and the lush green forests line the roots of the mountains around it. The villagers belong to the ethnic minority group Mhong which is one of many minorities in Laos.
For centuries the poor villagers have made their living from agriculture. The village lack basic infrastructure such as, education and clean water, and the villagers are also short of income generating opportunities. Since the beginning of 2012 World Volunteer have worked with local partners, the Lao government and the village committee to get the construction approved by local authorities.
The Building
You have the chance to take part in an exciting adventure by helping to build the ECO-bungalow. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore a new culture and contribute to a fun and rewarding experience. Examples of activities includes building furniture, painting, molding bricks and preparing the garden/playground.
Other activities
You will have time for other activities in the village as well. You could, depending on the season, take part in harvesting, bamboo weaving, gardening, planting and much more. You can also assist with preparing local Lao food and take part in traditional Lao dancing.
